History Curriculum Intent

We believe in the importance of not just learning history, but learning from history. Understanding past events and people and their significance gives students a better insight into the world around them.

We aim to teach pupils critical thinking skills that allow them to engage with and evaluate their local environment's place in English History and the wider history of the connected world.

This is taught through a curriculum that focuses on the importance of literacy and oracy and delivers history in a chronological, yet thematic way that is connected to topical issues that pupils face. Our pupils should complete their study of History as well-rounded young adults with a thirst for knowledge and the skills needed in everyday life.

Each unit of study begins with a significant day in History as a hook to draw in pupils. Teachers will then help pupils explore the events leading up to this day and evaluate the impact of the day on the short, medium and long term.

History is taught in the school by a team of committed subject specialists, who work closely together. We aim to develop each student’s understanding of the past and how it impacts on their present.

The subject is taught in groups of pupils of similar abilities. We feel that this system offers the ablest pupils the chance to progress rapidly, while allowing us to offer additional support to pupils who require it. All pupils, whatever their abilities, are encouraged to discuss their work with their teachers. Individual advice and guidance are given freely both in and out of class. The Humanities Faculty as a whole believes in celebrating the positive and awards are available for those students who consistently engage in their learning positively. We celebrate publicly those students who demonstrate am “always awesome” attitude.

The progress of all pupils is carefully and regularly monitored, and movement between sets occurs at regular and appropriate intervals. In KS3 History assessment takes place three times a term and provides all learners with opportunities to show what they have learned and what they can do. In KS4 assessment occurs every two weeks and is based around exam questions and skills.

The Humanities Faculty and History department sets high standards for all pupils and we encourage our students to be ambitious. We take great pride in the significant progress we see from year to year. Further to this, we offer a range of extra curricula activities and educational trips to support pupils’ learning.
