Modern Foreign Languages
MFL Curriculum Intent
Our vision in the Modern Foreign Languages department is that all language learners develop the skills and confidence to consider themselves as ‘World Citizens’ who belong in a multicultural, mutually respectful world. We aim to support students to understand other countries and cultures so that they can be more open and adaptable to new experiences; ensuring that topics contains an element of cultural reference to not only the target language country, but the wider Francophone and Hispanic spheres.
The department is committed to developing strong, lifelong linguistic skills and to encourage students to become curious and interested in the world. Through developing awareness of linguistic structures and grammar to communicate in a foreign language, our pupils also become more literate users of English. Ultimately, we want our students to have a love of languages and be effective communicators, and aim to achieve this by nurturing a linguistic curiosity and an intrinsic motivation to explore and respect other cultures and people.
Delivery
French and Spanish are taught by a team of committed professionals, who work closely together. We aim to develop each pupil's range of language skills to the full and to develop an interest in both the language and culture.
Modern Foreign Languages are taught to groups of pupils of similar abilities. We feel that this system gives the most able pupils the chance to progress rapidly, while allowing us to offer additional support to pupils who need it. All pupils, regardless of ability, are encouraged to discuss their work with their teachers. Individual advice and guidance are given freely both in and out of class times. The progress of all pupils is carefully and regularly monitored, and movement between sets occurs at regular and appropriate intervals.
The Modern Foreign Languages Department has high expectations of all pupils and we encourage them to achieve their absolute best. We take great pride in the progress we see from year to year.
