English Curriculum Intent

The Department intent aims to:

• Promote to all, a high standard of language use and develop resilience to speak, read and write at length for a variety of purposes, audiences and across a range of contexts,
• Equip pupils to speak, read and write fluently,
• Provide an effective curriculum design underpinned by a knowledge-engaged approach,
• Expose all pupils to the rich and broad chronology of the Canon of Literature,
• Develop a lifelong love of literature in pupils.  
• Develop pupils culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually,
• Create a passion for English and a well-rounded pupil who goes out into the world to become all that God has prepared for them.

Delivery

English is taught in the school by a team of committed subject specialists, who work closely together. We aim to develop each pupil's range of language skills to the full and to foster a love of reading literature.

The subject is taught in groups of pupils of similar abilities. We feel that this system offers the most able pupils the chance to progress rapidly, while allowing us to offer additional support to pupils who require it. All pupils, whatever their abilities, are encouraged to discuss their work with their teachers. Individual advice and guidance are given freely both in and out of class.

The progress of all pupils is carefully and regularly monitored, and movement between sets occurs at regular and appropriate intervals.

The English Department sets high standards for all pupils and we encourage our students to be ambitious. We take great pride in the significant progress we see from year to year.  Further to this, we offer a range of extra curricula activities to support pupils’ learning.
